timber gridshell
This project consists of a self-supporting timber gridshell composed of over 10,000 unique LVL members. The structure achieves clear spans exceeding 60 feet with a structural depth of under 10 inches, demonstrating a highly efficient relationship between geometry and material.
Each member was individually pre-drilled and mitered using a custom, on-site built CNC router driven by parametrically generated NC code. Multiple on-site scans were used to verify geometry throughout fabrication, allowing the toolpaths to be continuously adapted to maintain tight tolerances and enable the structure to self-assemble accurately in place.
materials: FSC certified lumber, steel
